[ Shouts indistinctly ] ♪♪ [ Shouting indistinctly ] -The Queen’s grandson Prince Harry is joining the military along with his brother, William.
[ Gunfire ] [ Indistinct shouting ] But with the war in Afghanistan in its bitter fifth year, the Queen faces a difficult decision.
Should she send them into battle?
♪♪ -The chiefs have an audience with the Queen once or twice a year.
You need to have done your homework.
She’s very wise.
I used to tell my staff, "See if you can get the midday slot."
Um, because after half an hour or 40 minutes, the Queen would ring a small bell and say, "Time for a sherry, I think, CGS."
"Oh, yeah.
Very good idea, ma'am."
[ Laughs ] What goes on in those audience and who says what to whom remains for the two people involved.
And I will break the rule, uh, about not divulging what goes on on this one occasion, when she was very clear.
She said, "My grandsons have taken my shilling.
Therefore, they must do their duty."
And that was that.
-[ Shouting indistinctly ] -But it was decided that William, as heir to the heir, the risk is too great.
-[ Shouts indistinctly ] -But for his younger brother... -[ Shouts indistinctly ] -...the risk was acceptable.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ -There's been an assassination attempt on Princess Anne.
-Princess Margaret has decided to get a divorce.
-Congratulations.
-Thank you very much.
-Thank you very much.
You're very kind.
♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] -You’re a monster.
-That?
That?
-That's called a camera.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] -Had the biggest audience in television history, a sixth of the world’s population.
-Excuse me.
I want to protect children.
♪♪ [ Camera shutters clicking ] -Will?
-Not many people have asked if I’m okay.
♪♪ -Can you recover from this, sir?
♪♪ ♪♪ [ Helicopter blades whirring ] -We’ve spoken about this almost being as normal as I suppose it gets for you being out here.
Is there a sense of sadness that you’re going to be going back to the U.K.?
-Um, not yet.
[ Chuckles ] Um, to be honest with you, it’s got to that stage now when I think everybody really wants to go home.
It gets like that for everybody.
Um, you know, we’re coming up to the five-month -- five-month stage.
The handover period takes about two weeks, as well.
So that’s pretty arduous because it’s less flying.
And when you’re not flying, it is quite boring.
There’s not a lot to do 'round Bastion.
But, yeah, you know, 10 weeks last time was like a holiday, just -- just to the point you get bored.
It was -- It was time for me to go home.
But that was -- for me, that was -- that hurt, being pulled out at that point, being dragged away from my guys.
It just -- I think it was all done -- It wasn’t done in the wrong way, but it was just -- ♪♪ -The war in Afghanistan has been raging for over a decade.
-A senior British official says that after 10 years of fighting and being part of the solution, we are now part of the problem.
But that’s rarely said publicly, and he didn’t want to be named.
-Meanwhile, back at Buckingham Palace, the Queen is shown to be keeping a close eye on events.
She diligently reads and absorbs intelligence dispatches.
-Well, of course, she has complete clearance to everything.
She’s had access to an exceptional amount of information and insight for longer than certainly anybody else within the country.
-It’s a part of her job that the Queen seems to take pride in, as she studiously works her way through her red boxes.
-She’s very, very discreet, completely reliable.
And she was completely on top of the detail.
And I remember thinking at the time, you know, "Wow, I imagine she knows more about this than we do."
[ Gunfire ] -The Taliban have their own intelligence operatives who are targeting Harry and have found out where he is.
Now they are planning a Trojan horse attack on his base, disguising themselves in stolen American uniforms.
On his 28th birthday, they infiltrate the camp.
[ Gunfire, indistinct shouting ] A suicide bomber breaches the walls of Camp Bastion whilst 15 insurgents storm the camp, killing two Marines.
But Harry escapes unscathed.
Despite his brush with death, the military is the making of Harry.
-It was really important to him to find a role for himself.
But definitely that was where he was happiest.
"These are people who accept me for being, you know, an Apache pilot, as opposed to what I was born into.
You know, I've earned my place here."
And I think he felt very much that, that this was something he was just naturally good at.
♪♪ -Harry becomes a war hero, just like his Uncle Andrew in the 1980s.
♪♪ And like his father, Prince Charles, William is forced to stay home whilst his brother follows his passion.
♪♪ -As much as this is duty, this is a -- for me, it’s also a really important point to be grounded.
And I feel doing a job like this really helps with sort of grounding, um, the core of what I’m sort of trying to become.
-What is that?
What are you trying to become?
-That's a very good question.
[ Chuckles ] I think just, uh... -Prince William, he was very keen to go, unequivocally, but it was complex, and some very great minds and experienced people took a view on it.
I think it was really tricky.
I think anybody who’s in the military who hasn’t actually, you know, been on an operation feels a sense of disappointment.
And I think especially, really, that was the one at the time.
And you’ve got everyone around you who’s been involved in it.
That is disappointing.
-There is a bit of jealousy, not just the fact that I get to fly this, but obviously he’d love to be out here, and I don’t see why he couldn’t.
His job out here would be flying the IIT or whatever, doing Chinook missions just the same as us.
No one knows who’s in the cockpit.
Yes, you get shot at, but, you know, the guys who are doing the same job as us are being shot at on the ground.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with us being shot at, as well.
-Whilst Harry lives a life of adventure, William doubles down on his duty... [ Crowd cheering ] ...and produces a royal heir.
[ Cheering continues ] ♪♪ -Virtually nobody comes out of a hospital having just given birth... ...and literally presenting your baby to the world.
I mean, there is something quite archaic about that.
It’s a very strange hybrid of being a public and private moment.
It’s the family understanding that in order for this mystique to continue, in order for this constitutional monarchy to have its place and for it to be part of who we are, we have to be invested in it.
-He’s got her looks, thankfully.
-No, no, no, no.
I'm not sure about that.
[ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ [ Indistinct conversations ] -After a decade in the military, royal duty eventually catches up with Harry.
-In June, of course, you’re leaving the armed forces.
-Yeah.
-Tell us, how difficult a decision was that to make?
And why do you think this is the right time to do that?
-I think, as I said before, it is a crossroads.
It’s the same -- I’m in the same position now as most people in my -- in my year group or my rank would be in.
I don’t really feel as though I would be in a right position to take on the careers of more soldiers and take on the responsibility of continuing to fly, for instance.
-Away from the stability of the army, Harry’s mental health starts to unravel... ...as the stress of combat and the death of his mother take their toll.
But if you’re Prince Harry, you can’t just pick up a phone to a therapist.
However, the royal family have always had good advisers around them.
-If you’re just a normal person in everyday life, you know, you might do this or you might do that and nobody takes any particular notice.
It doesn’t matter.
But if you have a, you know, public profile of some kind, then you have to think about, you know, how that might work, and you might attract attention for whatever reason.
And so, of course, you have to be thinking about that, and you have to be -- you have to be careful.
[ Cheers and applause ] -Therapy proves healing for Harry.
And before long, he’s giving candid interviews about his mental health.
-Being in situations where you’re at an engagement and not being able to do the flight bit, your body ends up kicking into the fight.
It was 20 years of not thinking about it and then two years of total chaos.
I’ve probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions, when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything’s coming at you from every angle, but, you know, it comes with -- it comes with the job.
-But he still has private hang-ups and confides to aides that he’s worried he’ll be pushed aside as his nephew Prince George gets older... [ Camera shutter clicking ] ...mirroring the fate of his uncle Prince Andrew.
♪♪ As the new year begins, Prince Andrew is skiing with his children and ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, in Verbier, negotiating the purchase of a luxury £13 million chalet.
-In 1982, Prince Andrew was flying helicopters and, you know, dodging Exocet missiles and all the rest of it and then had to find a role for himself subsequently.
-After the military, Andrew’s life has become a series of speechmaking events and time on his hands.
But his luxury holiday is interrupted with shocking news reports.
-Well, tonight, Buckingham Palace has issued a statement denying these allegations.
It names the woman concerned and says there has been no sexual contact or any form of relationship between her and Prince Andrew.
♪♪ -Now the Queen is faced with an impossible decision... ...whether or not to stand by her son.
As she decides, she goes to her church in Sandringham.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] -The more distant a special family is, the more they have to huddle together to find warmth within it.
You got to keep things private, which puts a burden on members of the family, as well, because everyone wants to know what’s going on.
-It has always been said that Andrew is particularly close to the Queen.
While Charles was destined for a life of duty, Andrew was the son who could always make her laugh and raise her spirits.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] When the Queen leaves church later that day, she has decided to back Andrew.
♪♪ She orders the palace to do something they almost never do -- write to the media, emphasizing Andrew’s denials and warning that palace lawyers are watching.
♪♪ And rather than being suspended, Andrew is sent to represent the Queen at the World Economic Forum.
[ Indistinct conversations ] -Good morning, sir.
-Please, please.
-Good morning, sir.
-But the story isn’t going away.
-Good morning, sir.
Can you recover from this, sir?
-I'd like to refer to the events that have taken place in the last few weeks.
And I just wish to reiterate and to reaffirm the statements which have already been made on my behalf by Buckingham Palace.
My focus is on my work.
-Days later, Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, also steps in to defend him.
-Enough.
It’s time to stop this, you know.
Buckingham Palace put out a denial.
End of.
That’s it, you know.
Buckingham Palace put out a denial.
And then these shockingly false allegations.
No, enough.
I’m not going to stand back and let a man that I’ve really admired -- He's one of the greatest men I know.
He’s such a gentleman.
And he does so much for his country.
I am not going to sit back and put my hand in the cookie jar and say, "Oh, yeah, poor prince."
He's not.
He’s a great man.
-Others, though, are less sure.
♪♪ -I suspect it’s even more difficult to be the second son than the first.
That’s what the history of the novel tells us.
And the Bible.
I think it’s true that the Queen always thought that her sister was in a difficult position because she was -- she was the number two.
Charles is very different.
And I think when you compare them, you become more aware of...
Prince Charles’s sense of decency... and of the importance of combining a degree of majesty with an important measure of humility, as well.
[ Cheers and applause ] -As the Queen turns 90, she continues to fulfill all her duties.
-I hope these happy celebrations will remind us of the many benefits that can flow when people come together for a common purpose as families, friends, or neighbors.
-She has steered the monarchy through every decade, every change.
But in 2016, Britain has never been so divided.
-We want Britain out!
We want Britain out!
-The Brexit referendum has split the country down the middle.
-You!
Shame on you!

[ Siren wailing ] -And a division is starting to appear in the royal family.
On a state visit to Canada, William and Kate work hard to maintain the Queen’s brand of traditionalism... -[ Speaking French ] [ Cheers and applause ] -...and to sell Britain’s place in a changing world.
-It’s a little rusty.

[ Laughter ] -But Harry focuses on his own venture, launching the Invictus Games for wounded soldiers.
-It was incredibly close.
-The Queen seems happy to promote it with him.
-Quite close, isn’t it?

-One can see her affection for Harry, and together they can bring some real star power... -Prince Harry, remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games?
-Careful what you wish for.
-...and shows she can play along, too.
-Oh, really?
-Now enjoying his life as a working royal, Harry is on the lookout for love.
Harry sneaks in the back entrance of Soho House and is here for a blind date with American actress Meghan Markle.
Harry takes her out again the next night.
And on their third date, he whisks her away to Botswana.
[ Cheers and applause ] Both William and his uncle Earl Spencer advise him to slow down.
But he and Meghan carry on dating.
Meghan is a celebrity in her own right and continues to pursue the causes close to her heart.
She champions women’s rights and charities like World Vision.
In India, she draws attention to the way that schoolgirls are treated when they have their periods.
-Thank you.
-But when she comes back, the palace tell her that if she wants to join the royal family, she may have to accept restrictions on what causes she can support.
[ Applause ] -Oh, yes.
Thank you.
♪♪ -Congratulations, sir.
What do you think about the engagement?
-No, we’re thrilled, thank you very much, for both of them.
I hope they’ll be very happy indeed.
-And tell us, how did you propose?
Was it romantic?
-Of course it was.
-Very.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] -Thank you.
-Thank you.
-But almost immediately, the British press attack Meghan in a way they don’t attack Kate.
The Daily Mail says she’s from a rough background and describes her as having exotic DNA.
[ Applause ] -All the work you do together is great, but working together as family, do you ever have disagreements about things?
-[ Laughs ] Oh, yes.
[ Laughter ] -Healthy disagreements.
-Okay.
The last thing you disagreed on, how'd you resolve it?
-Uh, I can’t remember.
They come so thick and fast.
[ Laughter ] -Is it resolved?
We don’t know.
-We don’t know.
Well, you’re putting on a great show if it’s not.
-No, but I think it’s really good that we’ve got, you know, four -- four different personalities and, you know, we’ve all got that same -- that same passion to want to make a difference, but, you know, different -- different opinions.
And I think those opinions work really, really well.
Working as family does have its challenges.
Of course it does.
Everybody here -- The fact that everyone’s laughing means that everybody knows exactly what it’s like.
[ Laughter ] But look, you know, we’re stuck together for the rest of our lives, so... [ Laughter ] [ Applause ] ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] -When Harry and Meghan marry, they throw a different kind of celebration.
It’s intended to reshape what a royal wedding can be.
The main event of the service is a black preacher from Chicago with a reputation not only as an extraordinary orator, but also as a humanitarian.
-The late Dr. Martin Luther King once said, and I quote, "We must discover the power of love."
-Reverend Michael Curry takes to the pulpit to spread his message.
-But love... love is the only way.
-The Queen and the royal couple appear moved by the sermon.
-Let us love one another, because love is of God, and those who love are born of God and know God.
Those who do not love do not know God.
Why?
For God is love.
-It’s a contrast with other members of the royal family, who seem amused by it.
-Imagine this tired old world when love is -- is the way, when love is the way, unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive.
When love is the way, then no child will go to bed hungry in this world ever again.
When love is the way, the earth will be a sanctuary.
[ Cheers and applause ] -After the wedding, William and Harry decide to stop many of their joint ventures and follow their own projects.
It’s as though the fault lines in society are spreading and causing cracks within the royal family.
Despite the Queen’s careful guidance, the monarchy is coming undone.
But at 93, she has no choice but to hold fast and continue.
[ Cheers and applause ] She’s about to host her 13th American president at Buckingham Palace.
-I remember going to see the Queen once to hand in my resignation.
I said, "Your Majesty, the time has come."
And she looked at me.
[ Sighs ] She said -- more or less, she said, "You people come and go.
I can’t resign.
I can’t surrender.
I’ve got to keep going."
And I said, "Well, the Lord tells me at the age of 70, I’ve got to go."
But she would never go anyway.
-Trump breaks protocol by shaking hands with the Queen and tells Fox News they have automatic chemistry.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] [ "The Star-Spangled Banner" plays ] ♪♪ ♪♪ Whilst Trump is in Britain, cementing the U.S. special relationship, American authorities are closing in on Jeffrey Epstein.
-Today we announce the unsealing of sex trafficking charges against Jeffrey Epstein.
The charges allege that Epstein sexually abused young girls by enticing them to engage in sex acts for money.
Epstein was arrested this past Saturday evening at Teterboro Airport aboard his private jet that had just landed from Paris, France.
-This time, Andrew’s connection to Epstein is undeniable.
Footage is unearthed showing the prince socializing with the pedophile.
♪♪ -It is upsetting to me to think that anyone who was closely associated with Jeffrey Epstein might argue that they didn’t suspect that he might have been sexually abusing children.
-I don’t think that Prince Andrew should wait for a gold-engraved invitation to speak with law enforcement.
He should get on a flight as soon as possible and make this happen.
-Again, the Queen has a decision to make -- whether or not to continue to stick with Andrew.
In the past, she has always put the reputation of the monarchy above the feelings of her family.
But here, she again decides to back Andrew, and Andrew decides to give a TV interview in an attempt to clear his name.
-She says she met you in 2001.
She dined with you.
She danced with you.
You bought her drinks.
You were in Tramp nightclub in London, and she went on to have sex with you in a house in Belgravia belonging to Ghislaine Maxwell.
-Didn’t happen.
On that particular day that we now understand is the date, which is the 10th of March, I was at home.
I was with the children.
I’d taken Beatrice to a Pizza Express in Woking for a party at, I suppose, sort of 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon.
The problem was the fact... -He just thought he was capable of getting away with some answers, which inevitably would turn 'round and hit him over the head with a truncheon.
-I think it just says that he’s -- he’s not entirely plugged in to the same reality as the rest of us.
-She described dancing with you... -No.
-...and you profusely sweating and that she went on to have a bath, possibly -- -There’s a slight problem with the sweating, because I have a peculiar medical condition, which is that I don’t sweat, or I didn’t sweat at the time.
And that was -- Oh, actually, yes.
I didn’t sweat at the time because I had suffered what I would describe as an overdose of adrenaline in the Falklands War when I was shot at.
And I simply -- it was almost impossible for me to sweat.
-Andrew expresses no sympathy for the victims during the interview and tells his family it has gone well.
-One of the prince’s proudest achievements, Pitch@Palace, has lost one of its founding sponsors, the accountancy firm KPMG deciding not to renew its deal.
-But the public reaction is a completely different story.
-Another firm, AstraZeneca, is reviewing its sponsorship.
The Outward Bound trust, for whom the Prince abseiled down the Shard, says it’s holding a board meeting in the coming days, his position as patron inevitably on the agenda.
The storyline of recent days is not something organizations are willing to be associated with.
And there are suggestions that even within Buckingham Palace, the fallout from the Prince’s television interview has caused division.
What he’d hoped would put the allegations to rest instead intensifying the attention.
-It’s very interesting.
-The situation now seems to be damaging the monarchy, and the Queen is forced to reconsider what to do about her son.
♪♪ -We’re all the more grateful that you join us on the evening of your 72nd wedding anniversary.
[ Applause ] -Three days later, she is at an award ceremony.
As she takes to the podium, Buckingham Palace are preparing a press release.
-Sir David, this award recognizes your many talents, and one can’t help but feel that for those of us of a certain generation, we can take great pleasure in proving age is no barrier to being a positive influence.
[ Applause ] -By the time she finishes her speech, her decision is made public.
Andrew must step back from all royal duties.
♪♪ But another dam is about to burst.
♪♪ Struggling to adapt to royal life, Meghan also goes on TV with her own explosive interview.
-You talked about the pain behind the brave face.
I don’t think a lot of people really understand what that is, so perhaps you could just give us an idea of what the last year has been like.
-Yeah, well, I guess -- and also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s, uh, it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.
-And the answer is -- would it be fair to say not really okay, as in, it’s really been a struggle?
-Yes.
-Meghan has broken the golden rule.
Never share the secrets of the royal family.
And so in different ways, both Andrew and Harry are a problem for the Queen.
♪♪ When the Queen gives her Christmas address for 2019, she takes an extraordinary step.
-Of course, at the heart of the Christmas story lies the birth of a child, a seemingly small and insignificant step overlooked by many in Bethlehem.
But in time, through his teaching and by his example... -The photos on the table show only the real successes.
Harry, Meghan, and their new baby are nowhere to be seen.
-...and deep-seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding.
-The Queen has decided to redraw the focus on the immediate line of heirs, with an official portrait showing the three future kings standing in solidarity with the Queen.
Harry and Meghan now make a huge decision.
-I’m going to move on with a bit of breaking news tonight, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced that they are carving out what they call a new role for themselves.
In a statement released in the last few minutes, they say they intend to step back as senior members of the royal family and work to become financially independent.
-But the Queen doesn’t believe that’s possible.
You’re either in or you’re out of the royal family.
She in turn responds by stripping Harry of his royal and military title.
The harshest punishment is reserved for the spare that didn’t stay.
♪♪ ♪♪ To some, it feels like the royal family is unraveling.
But in March 2020, the Queen gives a final glimpse of her greatness.
♪♪ -I’m speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time, a time of disruption in the life of our country.
-When the nation needed her most, the Queen was there.
-It was the Queen speaking to her people, and I think it did -- did move people.
-We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return.
We will be with our friends again.
We will be with our families again.
We will meet again.
♪♪ -Lockdown means that the Queen and Prince Philip isolate together.
-All that they've been together, the ups and downs of life, all that would have crowded in.
The war years, the giving of children, the blessing of children, the break up of marriages, and all this kind of thing.
-I think Prince Philip was a sort of window on the world for the Queen.
And the Queen herself has paid tribute to the fact that he was her prop and support throughout their long, long marriage.
-The time they spend together is the last year of Philip’s life.
-It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband.
♪♪ -Now the Queen is left alone to deal with the most serious allegations the royal family has ever faced.
-A graphic account of a first encounter Prince Andrew claims didn’t happen.
-Andrew's accusers' public statements become more vivid and compelling.
-I mean, it was horrible, and this guy was sweating all over me, like his sweat was like -- it was raining basically everywhere.
And I was just, like, grossed out from it.
But I knew I had to keep him happy because that’s what Jeffrey and Ghislaine would expect from me.
-She vehemently refuses to accept his denials.
-I’m calling BS on this because that’s what it is.
He knows what happened.
I know what happened.
And there’s only one of us telling the truth, and I know that’s me.
-Whoa!
-And now, like Diana before them, Harry and Meghan give a tell-all interview, revealing their unease about how the royals engaged with them when Meghan was pregnant.
-Do you think it’s because of his race?
And I know that’s a loaded question, but... -But I can give you an honest answer.
In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of you won’t be given security.
He’s not going to be given a title.
And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.
-What?
-They talk to Oprah for over two hours, but all the media cares about is the controversial issue of race.
-Sir, have you spoken to your brother since the interview?
-I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do.
-And can you just let me know, is the royal family a racist family, sir?
-We’re very much not a racist family.
-The Oprah interview is only the beginning.
Harry has evidently decided to abandon the royal family’s code of silence... ...and explains how years of trauma and frustration have come to a head.
-Family members have said, "Just play the game and your life will be easier."
But I’ve got a hell of a lot of my mum in me.
That was one of the biggest reasons to leave.
Feeling trapped and feeling controlled through fear, both by the media and by the system itself.
-Unlike others in the royal family, Harry has clearly been to therapy.
25 years later, he’s finally beginning to process his mother’s death.
-I was just all over the place mentally.
Panic attacks.
Severe anxiety.
When my mum was taken away from me at the age of 12, just before my 13th birthday, I didn’t want the life.
Sharing the grief of my mother’s death with the world.
I was so angry with what happened to her, and the fact that there was no -- there was no justice at all.
Nothing came from that.
The same people that chased her into the tunnel photographed her dying on the back seat of that car.
-Harry’s decision to leave the royal family is clearly not one he has taken lightly, and one sees the emotion written on his face as he explains his decision.
-But suddenly now I will never be bullied into silence.
Because to be honest with you, like a lot of other people my age could probably relate to, I know that I’m not going to get from my family what I need.
♪♪ -The Queen’s last ever appearance on the Palace balcony is notable for who is not there.
Harry has left the country and builds a new life in America.
