Williams, you've brought me, uh, what looks like a very interesting book here.
Um, you know the name of the author, I think?
GUEST: I think it's, uh, Thomas H. McKenney, yes.
APPRAISER: McKenney.
APPRAISER: This is a very important record of American Indian life.
It's a very, uh, fine and well-known piece of Americana.
But I noticed that there's something unusual about this copy.
And I want you to tell me about this signature that we find.
It's very fragile.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: Now tell me about the signature here.
GUEST: My grandfather gave me this book and his mother was Arry Ann Quinn and a Cherokee princess.
During the early 1900s, they were trying to get claims against the government for land and consequently, my grandfather was trying to trace the roots.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: Um... During those days, there weren't a lot of papers available.
APPRAISER: Right.
GUEST: Um... (papers rustling) Just, um-- APPRAISER: Now, tell me-- tell me about-- is this her signature, do you think?
GUEST: I have no idea.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: It certainly looks like it.
APPRAISER: And her name was Eliza Jane£ GUEST: Jane Arry Ann Quinn.
APPRAISER: ...Quinn.
And then she's written, "Cherokee Sac Fox tribe."
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: So that was the branch of the Indian tribes that she must have belonged to.
GUEST: She must have, yes.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
But-but you have some more material there.
GUEST: Yes, I have a-- what I think is a picture of her.
APPRAISER: And her’s this.
GUEST: And I also have her marriage certificate.
1853.
APPRAISER: 1853 in Philadelphia.
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: Right.
GUEST: And this is the copy of one of the claims.
APPRAISER: So you have the whole story here.
Then this comes up to as late as 1907, and this is the Special Commissioner of the Court of Claims of the Eastern Cherokee Enrollment.
APPRAISER: This has been sitting in my closet for quite a while.
APPRAISER: Well, you have a wonderful piece of family memorabilia, which is also a wonderful piece of, uh, Americana and of Native American history.
This book is ordinarily worth, say, $8,000 to $10,000.
Unfortunately, the condition is pretty... GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: ...rugged-- at present day values, I would put $5,000 to $6,000 on it.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: And it certainly has one of the most interesting stories that I've ever seen with any copy of this book.
It's really terrific.
